Is this ready to seperate...or shall I wait for more thickening?
Its definitely thickening at the right side...which is the new branch side. Left is the "doner" side.
Its only my 2nd graft i've ever done....so I kinda feel like i'm still on shaky ground here.
The 1st one failed 2 years ago on this tree.
See the bulge that's forming under the red pin.....? That worries me. I'm thinking when I separate, i'll cut before the bulge...to leave it on for now. The bulge looks nasty, but it might be fused only at the bulge site....unlikely, but not sure.
What do you think?

Probably... ?... but I'd wait until the graft end of the whip is distinctly thicker than the donor end. If you think it's taken, you can start weaning it off the donor side by shaving away 25% of the circumference of the bark/cambium every 2 weeks or so until the donor branch is fully girdled.

Thanks for that. Yeah that is the wise thing to do...and I have the time.

Interesting...and it makes all the sense to. I'll definitely do that.
The graft side will get the hurry up from the tree to reach for its independence. Just like what we, animals and birds do with our offspring....🥸

Looks like the grafted end is already slightly thicker than the donor side which would mean there's some contribution already coming from the main trunk. That's my cue to start the gradual removal of bark on the donor side to encourage more connection with the main trunk.
Hopefully that swelling is just caused by constriction by the pins and you can reduce it when you sever the connection.

That reminds me that I still need to get my credit card back from my grown son 😬
