Tree Thread: Hawiian Umbrella Tree

I wanted a banyan umbrella tree and the tree really lends itself to the style with lots of aireal roots.

Rather than waiting on air roots, i just took the nursery pot, plopped it down and left it out on the bench. I water it every day and a good deal of the soil has been washed away. I plan on continuing to wash away soil as I can. This is the variety with small leaves.

I think it is progressing nicely and the exposed root technique seems to be working.

Cool idea. Maybe when I repot mine (thread), I can just pull it out of the pot and set it on some new substrate. I like it!

It had three trunks and 2 died from a late hard frost that went through the greenhouse. My own fault. It was pretty bad. The remaining trunk will look cool but it will take most of the summer to recover. It was a successful project though. I went out and got another umbrella to do the same thing. I have also started doing similar things with some pines.
