tree prices; where can I find trees under $30?

If you have no experience at all, which I suspect, the best thing you can do is to go nursery hopping. It is true there are far better and more expensive sources, but for the money and availability you cannot beat the nursery trade for the first couple of years till you figure out that what you read and hear may not be accurate, according to realituy.

Yay another teen aged person. Most people in this hobby are older and it's kinda cool to know I'm not the only person around my age doing this (I'm not calling these other guys old ;)) I myself am new at this only a few months but I agree with the big box store things these guys said. That's where I got 4 of my trees (3 died 2 were like 5 years ago and the other one I'm not sure why.) But I got a juniper in October or September from Lowe's and paid a little over 5 dollars for and I cut some branches and it already looks nice-ish for what it is and I have 2 cuttings from it.(4 but doggie got 2 :() . I would like to say collect trees from the ground too but its a bit to wintery and you should wait a while for that. Good luck :)

Cast about on Craigslist or Freecycle. In the spring people will start remodeling. My last two box were free and remodel removals.

Two stumps $ 0.00

Nice to hear other success story on Craigslist.

My tally...60+ stumps (and my best trees)... $0.00.
Value to me, priceless. :)

I personally contacted the Portland bonsai exchange about that collected bristlecone and as of a month ago they said they would not ship. Maybe it's different now. Too bad, looks like they had some interesting trees. That Japanese beech was priced cheap.
