So I'm pretty sure that's what it's called. I wanna try a Japanese maple. I love in NY and was wondering the process of digging one up in the woods and chopping it down to the trunk. This is a thing right? Lol. If so is this adviced for a beginner and what term can I search for.

Harvesting, collecting, yamadori are terms to search. It's a simple process. Good tools will be worth your investment.

They don't call them "Japanese" Maples for nothing. Th odds of you finding one to collect outside of a landscaped situation are slim to none. Buy one from a store, or pick a tree that is native to your area.

Oak, Beech, Hornbeam, Hop Hornbeam, Tamarack, Haw, Willow, Elm, Honey Locust, Cherry, Crabapple, Mulberry are very good.
