I'm visiting my sister in Charleston, SC and want to bring back a very small live oak seedling and yaupon holly seedling from her backyard. Any recommendations for packing this? It's a relatively short trip back to Memphis TN.

I would wrap the root ball / small pot in plastic ensuring some moisture retention and no spillage. Put the seedlings in a bag for carry on as personal effects. Small shopping bag etc. Should be simple, and you can protect them from damage otherwise by how they are placed in an overhead bin or at your feet.

Thank you! Will be fun growing these back home as bonsai. Also they don't seem to have much in the way of roots, just main long ones. Can they still transplant?

Funny thing... I was just down in Memphis for Thanksgiving to be with my daughter and collected a bunch of various oak acorns from Overton Park that are now stratifying in my cold room. Hoping to leave a trail of White, Willow and Shumard oaks from here in MI to wherever I end up.

Hopefully, you got most of the root ball... wrap it in wet paper towels, put in a plastic bag for the flight, pot them up at home and keep from freezing if possible.

Thanks for reminding me to get acorns too!
