How late in the year is it safe to top Bald Cypress. Picked up a nice tree yesterday in nursery pot would like to cut down now but not sure on timing.
Doing it now would make it easier to move and store this winter.

If the tree is healthy, chop away. Down here in Louisiana, I am still collecting bald cypress, chopping both the top and bottom down to just stumps.
Another thing: You are in Georgia, bald cypress don't need to be stored in winter. I've seen bald cypress grown outside in Ohio and Kentucky even. Leave it outside.

Tree stands about eight to nine feet all 31/2“ base so should be safe to cut

I topped my only baldie when I collected it... in July! You could chop that thing hard now and, assuming it's healthy, It'll push lots of new growth below the chop in just a few weeks.

I have several young bald cypress in Virginia, zone 6. No winter protection except to have roots heeled in and not allowing them to dry out. I even have a couple in a pond. No problems now in 5 years.
