I took 3 young cuttings from a tiger bark ficus mallsai I recently bought, wired them together, stuck them in a block of fiber, set it on a new pot, and put it under a big plastic jar. So far it is happy and growing new leaves.

Ballsy!

Seriously....

I imagine it will take a while to get the fiber off...

Interesting....

Makes me wonder if you "grow".

Please....
What the hell do you intend to do with this thing?

Sorce

I did almost the same, only mine are a bit bigger and in bonsai-mix. It defoliated himself because I forgot to water 1 or 2 days (or got burned in the full sun), but still alive! (and tiny leaves)

A quick update: It has grown quite a bit, and moss really likes fiber blocs. And yeah, I am not going to be able to get the roots out of the bloc, just have to wait and see what happens over time as the trunk and roots expand.

looks great! Great experiment with really great stylistic results

Your final picture shows a great deal of progress, but something about this first image really makes me happy. I think it is the combination of the square block of fiber with the square pot and the tiny plant sticking out of it. Really darn cute.

Two years on.. I raised it up and trimmed roots and shoots.

This is phenomenal progress, congratulations. This is why I want to try fusion with ficus. I think I'll be saving all of my ficus cuttings and to try to get them to root for further experimentation like this later.

Do you have a special indoor grow set up (since you are in CO)?

I’ve been playing with ficus for a while ...

@John P. - wild, that is "so wrong" it can become a wild abstract stylized creation. I would love to see regular updates on this, please start a separate thread for this tree.

@GSCarlson - I really like the growth and maturity you got in a very short time. Nice. Keep updating. This is a good little tree.

So, what is that block of fiber? I tried to google it but just got pics of carbon fiber blocks lol.

That looks super cool, I like the progression over 2 years.

They are called Rock Wool or Stone Wool - it's actually like spun rock fiber, something like that. Supposed to have great balance of aeration and liquid retention for seedlings.
