I am really impressed by the free app called Lumos. I recently created a new Bonsai garden but need to add some benches. This app will use the camera in your phone to figure almost exactly how many hours of sun you will have on that spot on any day throughout the year. It has also helped me figure out that I don’t need to cut a few trees that I thought I did.

Right on, thanks for sharing the app. It will come in handy for placement of a grow out bed I intend to start this spring.

I have a north facing balcony, so I have to borrow a small space on the school courtyard where the kids won’t destroy my trees if I wanna get any sun

Fantastic! I just moved into a new house this summer and constructed my bonsai garden in a south-ish facing direction with several large trees blocking late fall to early spring sun shine. This should help ease my mind.

Thanks!

With the app I was able to find that I have plenty of sun about 11 hrs most of the year per day. Around Sept. 15th I unfortunately have some big Pine trees that are blocking 3 hours of my morning sun in most areas. Now I know that I may need to move some Pines around in the fall to get a bit more sun. The app has also helped me maximize my sun for veg garden. Overall the app has eased my mind a bit. The modern world has some nice perks.

So Lumos is iPhone only, but there's a solution for those of us who use Android... well... there's a few solutions...

Sun Surveyor (Sun & Moon)
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ratana.sunsurveyor

is $7.99 and has a 4.8 rating with almost 4000 reviews and 50,000 installs.

Not free, sure. But I'm pretty certain many of us have wasted $8 or more on dumber stuff than this.

Wow! Well worth the time to download and install. Now if will stop raining I’ll give it a try outside. I need to install a few more monkey poles and /or benches next spring but now I won’t have to wait until then to map out potential spots. Thanks for the heads up!

It looks like I might need to steal my wife's iPad for a couple of hours. I moved this fall and have yet to make any solid plans for how I'm going to set things up in the spring.
