Thinning for fast growth

In the past the new apex of my chopped BC, live oaks, and Ilex grew really slowly. Earlier this year, I read a quick post from Boon on Facebook on how to thin trees for fast growth on selected branches. I did that early in July and the difference was remarkable. All these trees were short and really bushy before thinning. Immediately after I thinned out the side branches, the selected branches started to bud again and grew another 2 ft. The gain in caliper also matches the height gain.

I believe I read it in the Bonsai Boon group in Facebook. He discusses thinning very often there. Basically it is not far different from what have been discussed here. Instead of allowing all branches to grow freely and become bushy, I thinned out and cleaned up the branches I don’t see any future for and allow the selected one to get all the sunlight and nutrients. Except for the directional wiring ir whatever at the origin of the branch, they are allowed to grow unchecked until they get to the size I want then I will chop them. Nothing truly exceptional or great details in that post other than a master bonsai artist talking about his practice. However, that post got me to think about what I am doing or not doing.
