Hi guys, I see a lot of the same post "picked up my first bonsai, what do" 99% of those are Walmart ficus.

Now I'm nowhere near an expert, but I'll tell you from my experiences that ficus are NOT where beginners should try beginning.

Those ficus are so fragile and need constant attention! Something a novice is is no way prepared for.

My suggestion? Get yourself a decidious tree to begin with. In my experiences, elms are veeeeerrrrry forgiving to novice mistakes (such as doing wrong things at the wrong time!)

And I know it sounds like common sense to most of us... But if it grows outside.. or you found it outside, then it stays outside! A general rule to go by, is if it's a tropical plant, it most likely will be able to live inside, anything that needs to go through a dormant period.. NEEDS to stay outside!

Welcome to the nut house!

Beginning Bonsai ---------

step 1 ] ---------- Join a club or have a friend who does Bonsai for at least 10 to 20 years or at least read a Book.

step 2 } ------------- Join a club ....................................................................................................................................

At some point realise that you have indoor and outdoor situations and each has to have at least 1400 lux for 8 to 16 hrs
and a fan to move air, plants should not touch each other . Humidity trays don't work .

Step 3 -------------- join a club ...........................................................................................

Things stuck in Bonsai pots are not Bonsai , they are things stuck in pots.

Fukien Tea --------------- I love you.

Easy plant for us ----------- zone 9 maybe zone 8
Needs to rest ------ Christmas to February
Freely draining soil ----------- lots of sun.

Can be a bug magnet.

Not a good Beginner shrub or indoor plant.

All these Mallsai are grown outdoor China and need rest. Zone 9
Good Day
Anthony

* The Chinese Ficus are not Tropical coming from a zone 9/10
