The "Wake Up Vance Wood" Post or My Attempt at Mame

All kidding aside, what we have here is my Avatar. First photo was taken in December 2013 which was about 3 months after collection. I repotted it in January 2014 (photo 2). Last two photos were taken in the last couple days. The tree stands 4 inches above the soil line. You can see the branches have thickened up quite a bit. I’ve been pinching regularly. My newest plan is to remove the top of the deadwood down to just above where the main branch jets out from the trunk. I want to bring some foliage over the top of the tree to create some balance and in it's current state it doesn't look like a tree you would find in nature. However, I want to keep the remaining Shari exposed. Ideas, thoughts and/or critiques are welcome.

Yes, it is a Japanese Boxwood that came from a 30+ year old 4 foot tall landscape planting. After it was dug, I was preparing it for a pot and this just fell away from the main plant. It had very little roots but I decided to put it in a pot just to see if it would grow. It never skipped a beat. Then, I decided to get more serious with it a begin preparing it for bonsai. I'm thinking it will take about 5 years to develop the way I hope it will. We shall see.

Thanks! My biggest dilemma I'm facing now is whether or not to remove the piece of deadwood at the top. It really needs to go for development of foliage on that side of the tree. But since no one has come up with a way to grow deadwood, I am reluctant to remove it.

I would personally leave the deadwood until the tree really starts to fill out. Consider growing the foliage off of the back of the tree and with a secondary branch off to the left to help wrap the foliage back around to the front of the tree. As you say, growing deadwood is not an option so I would just leave it and see what develops out of it, it is an interesting feature and with more carving could become a great focal point sticking out of a nice large canopy.

This is a boxwood, I dont think I Vance works with them. This thread would be more up Dario's alley.

Also, I think Vance may be taking a day or two break from the forum.

I posted this before the things got heated. I was hoping to get Vance's opinion on where to go with it (besides the trash pile) but... well you know the rest of the story.

I guess I am so out of the loop today. I think the title was confusing...and ones were just as puzzled as myself. I agree...Dario might have some good ideas for this tree.

The Jin...I am curious if one plans to carve it a bit. It seems. So huge in comparison to what is going on with it so far. But...as one said you can't grow deadwood. So holding off until it's more mature might be an extremely wise move.

Mike, I commented to Mr. Wood that although I only have "material" and not bonsai I was going to start posting what I have for critiques and suggestions. I don't know if that's a good idea or not but I'm going with it for now.

How's this? I basically just removed the top snag. Looks nice and should improve a lot next year as you get more branching and foliage.

That's exactly what I was talking about Dario! I've got to spend some time with my photo editing software. It makes a big difference when you can put your visualizations in photo form. Thanks!

If I understand your jist, then that would be a shame. But if he cant keep his blood pressure from rising every time he thinks someone is attacking him, then it might be the only option.

The constant bickering has driven off alot of people. Ill admit Ive come close to leaving myself at times.
There are lots of post lately, but most of them are new people with trees that there isnt enough much to talk about, or "Im new, help me save my tree".

I also do think that the people that are more experienced have already updated theit current work this spring hwn they did the spring pruning, repotting, cleaning up stuff. Also, most of us aquired new material in the spring and made posts on those then and there is nothing to update yet. We are all mostly watering and waiting for summer to be over. Not much to talk about.
