So...
I ordered my first Maple a couple weeks ago (and a Peter Adams book to accompany it) and I was so excited to get home and unpack it.
I brought it on to my second story deck to inspect it and then finally put it on my bench for safe keeping until next year.

I go inside to grab a beer and my phone to take a few pictures. As I walk out the door the handle catches my sleeve.
The beer splashes onto my shirt and causes me to turn like a Tasmanian Devil.

Turns out the tree wasn't on the bench. I left it on the railing. Too late to catch it I watch it tumble all the down onto the back deck.

I almost didn't want to run down and look at the disaster but I had to.

Luckily the tree fell straight down onto its bottom and it flew out of the nursery pot, cracking it and spilling it's soil everywhere.

I quick grabbed a pond basket, as much of its soil as possible, and some leftover I had at the bottom of a bag. I carefully placed it into it's now home and gave it a good watering.

Lucky for my it was the hottest week of the year...lol.
I diligently missed the leaves multiple times a day, kept it in a shadier area, and made sure to keep it properly watered.

To my horror the leaves started turning brown and crunchy and I thought it was a gonner. Every day more and more leaves dropped and the tree looked more and more sad.

I wasn't close to giving up but In the back of my head I thought I killed it.
Luckily this week wasn't too hot in Pa. And there were a few overcast days and a little rain.

I went out onto my deck a couple days as I normally do to check on things and water. To my surprise I found signs of little buds pushing!

These pictures are from today and it looks like they're moving right along.
I'm so relieved.

Good news on recovery!
I can visualize your moments on the thrilling made-for-a-movie-clip as it happened.
Your story cracked me up…..I could see the whole event unfolding through your story telling. Story telling….a good talented gift you have.

Haha thanks! It's funny now but I saw the tree dying in slow motion

Mistakes happen. Keep taking good care of it. Maybe start giving it half strength fertilizer. You want it to be healthy going into dormancy.
A few days a go I actually was giving it ¼ strength if not less to err on the side of caution

Hard not to laugh at the story and how it unfolded but glad to see tree trying to recover

Why couldn't it have been one of my cuttings or some crappy nursery stock I was debating on burying out back lol
That's not the way Murphy's law works. I have often said it it wasn't for Murphy's law, there would be no law at all.
Glad it is on the rebound.

Hopefully it will be ok. I’m not a fan of pond baskets, but the soil looks retentive enough.

If it makes you feel better, during the first intensive at Bjorn’s, I had this Shimpaku on that stand, and thought it might let down slowly when I turned the release. Instead, it dropped immediately to the floor, tree and all, and I caught it by the trunk as it was going off the backside. I would have been very upset to destroy that pot.

And you were going to hide it from us had the tree not recovered. :)

Man I'd probably crawl under the table and hide... especially around that group haha. But hey, you got a fun story out of it!
