The Bonsai Two Step

Judy, your winter greenhouse is outstanding. I feel twinges of envy every time I see it. I really should build myself a similar space. It is really a good way to go.

I tend to focus on "the cheap route" when I know, with some planning, and saving a little at a time, I eventually could do something similar. I'm not certain I will stay where I am at, so there is ambivalence about building projects.

So, either grow hardy species. Or figure out a way to keep 'em cold and dormant, until it is safe to go outside. And it "ain't safe" until the local landscape trees wake up. If you landscape maples, elms and other street trees have not gotten to at least the leaves being half unfurled, a late freeze is still likely.

This is a piece of wisdom that is so obvious, yet so easily overlooked.

When deeply pondering (is there another way?) this situation here for me, where I will only be one year, I decided there is enough enjoyment to be had, to set things up proper and on top of it, the up front work will save me some time and headache.

I can owe you a day of work if I think about it. Knowing I'll never go 9-5 again has certainly opened up some scheduling possibilities.

This past winter, these little guys where hanging around on top of a grow box with next to no protection. Now I know they can survive lows in the mid teens for several hours at a time since we had several nights of that. This was just a test. And last night went down to around 35f. When I checked this morning, they look totally fine. I did watered the trees yesterday to better protect the roots from frost though. I'm not sure if that even matter lol.

I think the one on in far left is a Sycamore actually. And it will get transfer to a proper grow out pot.

Because my ginseng ficus has been out for the last 3 snows and four Frost's and it's still green in the buds.

I'm so sad this lunacy has a name, and we enjoy it.

I do almost enjoy it. It gets me into the rhythm of watching growth and progress daily... or rather makes me excited for the day that the trees can stay put and I can just spectate instead of moving them to and fro.

*almost... my back would disagree.
