This contest will run 7 years - from February 1, 2026 - February 1, 2033

The starting material needs to be a shimpaku juniper,Juniperus chinensis, with no prior work done to it (except root work) and it needs to be smaller than a pencil in girth (no length restrictions) . You can use material that you currently own, you can make cuttings or airlayers of qualifying materials, or you can buy something from a retailer.

Rules of the Contest
(1) Start by replying to this thread to indicate that you plan on participating. When you have acquired your tree(s) you must also start a thread labeled "USERNAME's Shimpaku Juniper contest entry" with photos of the tree(s) you plan to work on.
(2) Try to share as much information about your material as possible: where you sourced it, what type of soil it is in, how it was propagated.
(3) At the minimum you need to post one photo per year showing general progress. You are encouraged to start with more than one plant. In the early years of the contest, you will hopefully have photos of numerous trees in development, however by the end of year five you should have culled the number of trees down to only a few that will remain the contest. By the end of year 7, you should have one tree to rule them all.
(4) On February 1st, 2033, you can only enter ONE TREE as your finalist, even if you have more than one that has shown good development. A reminder will go out towards the end, but you will need to submit final photos to an email in order to be considered for the judging.

Judging Criteria
Trees will be judged on quality and future potential. We will not be able to create 'finished' trees, but rather are looking to create a tree that has come the farthest and is setup the best to be a show tree in the future. The 'final' tree can be of any size, but smaller trees might be easier to produce in that time frame.

Awards
I will present the final photos to a guest judge to make the final judgement and provide awards for the top three trees.
ADDITIONALLY, there will 2 awards given for the posts that generate the most engagement, in order to encourage user participation. The main goal of the contests is to learn technique and leave a trove of photos and discussion that will inspire future readers, so try to set a reminder to post often and keep everyone updated.

P.S. Thank you to all the members who batted around ideas and helped this come together and for the other contest hosts (especially @Bonsai Nut) from whom I borrowed (stole) many of the ideas and much of the text for this contest.

I haven't had great luck with cuttings in the past, but I'll give it another shot in spring. Looking forward to seeing what everyone can do!
You can always purchase a few from someone to get started and then try to propagate this winter.
Starting now with already rooted cuttings now will set you off to a better start.

I'm in!

How would the air layer option work? Do we choose a pencil-thick whip on a parent plant now and start the air layer in the spring?
As long as the entry is less than a pencil thick, I think it can qualify. I just want to give as many options to people as possible.

Starting the thread now and going 7 years should allow people to start late and still be able to catch up.

I'm also in, I already have a few Itoigawa and Kishu cuttings from this year that I bought from a store. I will also try propagating my Itoigawa cuttings this spring.

Very nice new contest this is right up my alley.
This is a contest I got loads of material for so I will join this contest and start with Kishu and Itoigawa Shimpaku.
But I will probably end the contest with the Kishu Shimpaku (because they grow a little better in my garden).

This is such a cool contest idea - and lucky me, I bought several small kishu & itoigawa starts recently that I haven't wired or anything yet! And I've got a bigger Itoigawa coming from Left Coast Bonsai's Thanksgiving auction too - so I could take some cuttings from that if my material's too big.

Do you have discounts for contest participants? I would prefer to support our BonsaiNut community, even if it might be cheaper from a bulk supplier.

Thanks for wanting to support me. I wasn't doing this contest in order to sell trees, but I would do buy one/get one free if you leave a note on your order or message after your order. Up to 8 free.

Good from now until the contest starts, or I run out of plants. I only have itoigawa in 2 year old stock, but have both kishu and itoigawa in 1 yr.

Sound good?

Forgive my newbie ignorance, but in my researching, I came to the uncertain conclusion that shimpaku is any variety of J. chinensis. Is this accurate? If so, I can try rooting my own cuttings, as well as some already started by growers who know a lot more than I do.

Yes, you are correct. Any J. chinensis is good for the contest. I want to leave it as wide open as possible to make it accessible.
I don't love needle junipers or J. procumbens, but I don't suppose there is an issue with them for the contest as long as the starting criteria is met and someone makes a case for them.

I'm in. I would love to see some off the Bonsai Podcasters out there get in on this as well. Many of them talk about growing J. Chinensis for shohin. I have also been re-listening to some older Black Pondo Podcasts, one of which had mention of other forums having more professional participation. Would love to have that happen here. Maybe @JEads can help make that happen! At least for this contest.
Please and Thank you.

I am in. Ordered a 4 pack of Itiogawa from Left Coast Bonsai today. I already had 1 but this will give me some options. Honestly, they are a bit harder to find on the website than kishu.

So.. I might be in but might be cheating a little too. Christmas period is wholesale bonsai processing time wherre I do a lot of wiring & design: I might do work over the christmas break already. From February into march and april I am preoccupied with workshops, repotting, overall gardenprep etc.
