The 2023 Yamadori/Collecting Thread

So I guess in the meantime you're practicing with lower-quality trees to perfect your collection technique?
Exactly.
I already have a couple trees whose potential is greater than my ability, so I'm reminded every day to not get in over my head.
Lost a great tree back when I very first started, before I learned that lesson.

Picked up a hawthorn today off craigslist
I cut it back a bit more after the last image and defoliated some. I cut the downward root, but didn’t mess with the root ball too much, as it’s kind of out of season, although it pretty much feels like spring here… the tree was fully leafed out.
The rootball was pretty shallow and contained, so I have my fingers crossed.

That’s a good attitude to have. You might want to practice on lesser material and save the the good stuff for a few years down the road.

Jealous! I love hawthorn. Not sure how it will handle the transplant in leaf, but best of luck to you!

Heat and humidity are quite the combination. It's amazing how much we rely on evaporative cooling, and how effective it can be when the conditions are right.
I was wearing a wader and humidity was 90+% RH. I drank ice water and was still being cooked under the neoprene.

About 3 months from collection and starting to see some signs of life on this thing- new growth on the top and roots starting to emerge from the bottom of the box. All of the new growth that was on it died back shortly after it was collected and planted.

Now I just need to decide on a front. Trying to highlight the 3 trunks so was initially thinking picture #1. But now that I look at it some more I'm almost thinking #2 shows the trunks better, only issue is a big bulge coming from an old root that goes straight toward the viewer. Still don't think it'll ever be a show tree but once I get it in a pot I think it'll be a cool addition to the collection.

Definitely #2. Once you get some decent nebari going you should be able to hide that bulge amongst them. You could also just carve it out some day.

I'm keeping it under my house on the east side so it gets plenty of morning sun. I water it about every other day

I have my American beech out in morning sun till like 2 pm , and I water daily .. especially while it’s moving its buds , it needs plenty of water , more than every other day. And plenty of sun, once the leaves harden off is when you could be more careful with foliage.

Late to the party. Anyway this is a prunus spinosa, blackthorn, that I dug up may 13. It then stayed in a black bag for 5 weeks and it left the bag a week ago. First pic in the ground. Then dug up, planted and current state.

I thought I saw somewhere earlier in this thread to keep it out of a lot of a lot of direct sunlight. And I guess I probably do water more than every other day but I wait for the soil to get a little dryer. Anyway, should I be giving it any fertilizer at this point or should I hold out to make sure I don't burn any roots

If the buds are still opening up some more sunlight won’t hurt.. it’s when the leaves are fully opened , where you could burn them.. and I wait till leaves harden off to fertilize
