This is a pair of normal Hinoki that spent about 2 decades in one gallon containers and tightly packed with about 100 more. Resulted in some tall skinny trees with minimal foliage... right up my alley:)

Rock planting.., pair of Hinoki and three mountain azaleas. 54” to the top. Japanese blue glazed suiban. It’s been growing together for 4 years... give or take a year.

I think it looks good from a couple fronts...

I disagree with Ollie. I think the hinoki's are powerful by themselves and the azalea's are a distraction. In the sense of scale I see the conifers being six times the size of the 'normal' trees. That's insanely tall!

But that's the thing with art, we don't have to agree. I still like what I'm seeing!

Normal....how boring:). It’s fun to play with the unexpected...

I do see Wires_Guy_wires point but think it can be solved. It does look a bit like normal trees and disproportionately large trees.
If the azaleas are shaped more like shrubs, with the lowest branches close to the ground (as azaleas/rhododendrons normally grow). This solves the conflict, than you have big trees with undergrowth.
The azaleas will not be great bonsai that way, but the whole will work better.

I'm glad it bothers you and you think it needs to be fixed:)

Your multi species plantings always remind me of landscapes I have hiked through. I love to see plantings that have conifers, small shrubs, flowers, makes a beautiful scene.

Thanks Wilson! You point out what I like most about rock plantings and tray landscapes!!

Amazing! John, are you just going to tease us with the azaleas, or are you going to share any photos of the composition in bloom?

The bottom branch on the larger hinoki is magical...

Beautiful image John. Something bothers me a little.

The trunk of your largest azalea is almost the same diameter as the trunk of the tall hinoki. Understory shrubs have slender trunks compared to the trees that make the canopy. If you have younger azalea, I would switch out the older, thick trunk azaleas for younger slender trunk azalea to make the scene more unified.

Just my 2 cents. Regardless, this is a really well put together scene.

Thank you... no photos in bloom unfortunately. I have love hate relationship with that branch... the pruners have been poised to remove it:)

Thanks for the thought Leo.

Replacing the azalea and giving this one its own pot would also work of course.
I must add that I'm critical on this detail because I think the two hinoki and the rock are very nice, it's a great piece.

Wow, very cool on many levels. I agree, all good fronts but, the last is my favorite by far. The azalea in the back gives me a feeling of 3D in a 2D picture, pretty dang impressive. Could go on but, I’ll stop. Okay, a little more; just a great depiction of an ocean cliff side. The arrangement and angles of the planting work really well, feels natural to me for lack of a better description. Fantastic work!
