has anyone ever used this?
does anyone have anything good or bad to say about?

QuickMemo+_2016-01-22-06-05-40.png This .25-.5 looks decent.
This is almost the same stuff as them hydroballs. Cept those are bigger.

I'd try this.

I'd try this.

Sunleaves makes a smaller size for Bonsai http://www.sunleaves.com/Product/Details/SBR304. The funny thing about the rest of the sizes they sell are mainly sold as a hydroponic product. Now if you think about in hydro growing Silica has little value. It (Si) does however have favorable benefits in soil/substrate.

it's my understanding this is a high fired clay product-so will this be any different than the fuellers earth (molton thrifti sorb) that i already use

I bought the bag pictured once. Particle size on the large side, most are closer to the 0.5".

It's similar to expanded shale, almost ceramic like. Has pores, similar water holding as lava.

It's not anything like fullers earth. If you can find the smaller particle variety I think it'd be worth considering.

That Link says "These microporous, 1/8-inch to 1/4-inch expanded shale rocks are pH-neutral and do not degrade."

so i decided to get this and found a good price for them-$24.50 and free shipping for a 50 liter bag, which is a big ass bag,i believe it's around 2 cu.ft.
i bought 2 bags.
i'll do my best to give a(amateur) report so far if anyone has any interest in them.

the bag appeared to have a lot of large particles-close to an inch.after sifting about 2 gallons worth through 1/2"hardware cloth, i'd say it's 50/50 over/under 1/2".
the under 1/2" particles seem to have an even range of sizes from 1/4" to 1/2".i'm hoping as i reach the bottom of the bag the smaller particle ratio will get higher.i'll be sifting 1 of the bags on and off today and i'll let you know the ratio of a full bag when i'm done.i'm hoping to have 2 cubic feet of material from 1/4" to 1/2" when i'm done with both bags

they are pourous on the inside similar to lava and they have a hard shell on the outside but will break with pliers-some easily, some not so easy
i've had some soaking in water for a week with no signs of breaking down. out of 1 dozen particles one of them floated
