I recently noticed several leaves on my elm had lost color. Upon closer inspection I found vertical growths emerging from the tops of the leaves. Any idea what is causing this?image.jpgimage.jpg

The are leaf galls. Elms seem to be susceptible to them. Unsightly yes, but no large health concern. I just cut off affected leaves, and have not seen any after effects from them. Some years they are worse than others, this year I have none to speak of.

That was my guess, but the pictures I saw in one of my books was a bit different. The ever helpful google search produced images similar to what I see. Now that I thought about it, I also noticed this on my peach tree.

Thanks for the help!

My Seiju has this issue. I cut them off when I trim. Glad to know its not a major issue

I have them on my elms this year too.I have read they are harmless, just pluck them off and burn them, though I never burn mine. There is peach leaf curl also on mine.If left on it could weaken the vigor.Same treatment, just pluck off and burn,It comes from spores in the air in spring.
