Stand build number 4

Hey nuts. I finally got to finishing a stand I started last year. I cut the live edge pieces sometime ago, but didn’t haven’t been inspired to finish due to last years dismal bonsai year. But spring has me springing, and I finally finished it up. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t inspired by Austin Heitzman. He’s a big inspiration and a true pioneer in bonsai stand building in my opinion.
Walnut frame, olive wood live edge and wormy maple platform. I hope you lie it. I’ll post some process pics later, but here’s the finished project.

I wonder if the top could be more "settled" if the surface was flush and the ends enclosed by the same wood/stain? Might be a bit more ridged and allow for a larger tree to be displayed?
The burl "gussets" might overwhelm a smaller planting?

Beautiful work. I really like the art in the design and wood.
With bonsai stands we need to be careful not to upstage the stars though. This stand will need a good tree for the bonsai to gain any attention.

Applause for the craftsmanship. Attention to detail evident in the grain match and burl pattern. Great job!

Thanks Lance!! I went back and forth on wrapping the front of the top, but liked the angle cuts at the end of the cantilever. I thought it differentiates the top from the bottom a bit. I also considered extending the top out past the end of the frame. In terms of strength, it could handle some weight, but I certainly don’t have a tree nice enough that wouldn’t be overwhelmed by a loud stand!

Thanks Shibui. Exactly why you see no pics of stand with tree! It would def take a high quality tree to balance the visual, and I’m still working on that. I also think it needs a semi cascade, but I only have 1.

Nicely done. I’m a big fan of Heitzman as well and this is worthy. I very much like the unframed edge on top with the detail of the bevel. It lightens the look. Good use of different woods. I would like to see it with a tree on it. Since the stand itself has movement I think the tree needs it as well, probably to the left.

Thanks Velo. Ugh, I wish I had a tree nice enough. I’ve got some pretty good vertical trees, but as you said, a tree with lots of movement, or even, in my opinion, a semi cascade would look best.

Austin Heitzman does work very similar. But I will take the praise my friend, thank you. I’m going in to 5 years of being a self employed designer/carpenter and as I move forward, I really want to make and sell bonsai stands and displays. It’d bring me so much joy and give me an excuse to be in the bonsai world more! Maybe even a spot at the national show slanging lumber!!
