Stand Build #12

It’s been almost a full year since my last stand build. I was feeling motivated to get another going. That said, I build stuff every day for a living fortunately and while I mostly get to pick and choose my projects, they are not ALWAYS the funnest. I still feel lucky to do it. This stand is a precursor to a stand that I am being commissioned to build for another member for a tree he will submit to nationals next year. Wanted to get my feet wet again on these little guys before I build his. This one is big. 19 or so inches by 13 or so inches. Walnut across the board. A simple lacquer finish. I’ll be putting this one up on the auction sites either this week or next. Hope you like it.

I've been milling walnut from a tree in my dad's yard that died some time ago and doing mostly carving projects with it. Gorgeous wood to work with. Nothing like this yet, though. Can barely imagine how I made that night stand in high school wood shop.

miters on the legs were cut first before shaping. Shaping of the legs were done after miters were cut. Top frame was cut second with associated miters for the legs and rabbits to accept the glued up top. Once the legs were glued to the frame, the top was glued to the frame. Then i ripped progressively increasing angles of material off of the frame to get a rough shape to match the legs. I then hand planed and sanded to shape. Hand sand to finish then finish. No nails on these pieces. ever.

It’s funny, this is the second time in the last 2 weeks I used the word nailed, intending the meaning “executed with precision” and folks though I literally meant to use nails lol

Typically just a spray on poly.

Do you wet sand, or do any buffing/leveling after? Spray would be difficult cult with the nooks and crannies of most stands
