Hello,

I am new to bonsai and have recently acquired some new junipers from a general nursery nearby. They are about 2-3ft tall and in the pots they came, which has some general potting soil.

I know they weren't bought at a bonsai nursery, but can they be good candidates? If so, should I re-pot using traditional bonsai soil?

Welcome to Crazy!

If I told you I had a medium sized dog, would you know if it could do tricks?

Anything CAN be good material. Not everything IS.

Your wisdom is uncanny. Sometimes the obvious is too obvious haha. I'll post pictures soon and up my knowledge. Thanks!

You will learn a lot from these plants for sure!

Update. Ditched the nursery junipers. Too big for my experience haha.
I ended up finding a bonsai nursery about an hr from my place that hooked me up two smaller junipers to work with. I’ve got some proper soil and training pots. Signing up for a class with them soon. Already learning.

Google and YouTube are your friend!!!! In southern Cali you’ll have many classes and resources to learn nearby as well. Also, search this site for such information.
