Well check THIS out.

Obviously as gag as it isn't a bonsai, but check out the foliage on this elm seedling. It halfway died, dried up, and I just pulled it by the porch in some shade. The leaves have stayed this size for a couple months now.

This isn't a seiju or anything, probably American or Chinese elm, a seedling that came up in the landscape.

Serious question from a new student of the art:
What are the odds you have a brand new variety?
Ulmus parvifolia:
Bonselm
Folitissima
Tiny Dancer

Could it have been sprayed with herbicide?
Unlikely, as it was in my backyard and then plugged right by my house. Occasionally the pest control powder the eves it is under, but there is a podocarpus right next to it that is thriving.

I wish, but it had regular leaves before the involuntary defoliation. Just an extreme example of leaf size reduction due to stress IMO
