Hello Folks,

I purchase 3 smoke trees during the past 2-4 years. They’ve been kept in their nursery containers since.

Yesterday I gave them a good hard pruning in hopes of encouraging some back budding.

Is there anything else I can do to create back budding? I’m happy with the trunk diameters as they are right now.

Can I completely prune all of the branches so no leaves remain?

Thanks for any help

Bobby

I was just out looking at mine. I cut back to just micro buds and no leaves. No action yet, but it was just a couple days ago.

I am concerned that the soil may remain to wet during this period of inactivity. Nursery soil topped with DE in a nursery pot.

Other than that, the are said to take a cut back fine.

I saw one near by that was stumped out in winter, haven't checked on it lately but I think they do it regularly, since it's taking over a front lawn and walkway.

I've cut back hard, left no leaves. If it's a healthy tree you should get more buds than you know what to do with.

Thank You Sorce.

What does DE stand for?

Perhaps I’ll cut the long branches with the leaves on the smallest Royal Purple and the Golden Spirit then. I’m really liking the medium sized Royal Purples long stem

Aye! I reckon larger sifted Napa 8822.

Does anyone work with the yellow version of this tree or is it not acceptable?

Pics!

Does it smell as good as the purple?

My sense of smell has been going downhill for years, but kind of smells lemon like to me. Mine aren't much more than seedlings so not much to look at.

One of my favorite trees. I've had mine in a pot for four years now and can't get it to smoke in the spring. Any tips? ;)

I swear Mine flowered the spring after I whacked it in late fall.

But you gotta go look I'm toasty and can't remember!

Went and checked on this and it's pushing little speck of red.

Hindsight.

I should have done this way earlier, to get a full bit of growth before the solstice.
This timing(here) is going to have it needing to push through the time it wanted to be dormant.

Which means I may end up with No, or a late fall growth, which leaves it susceptible to early frost damage.

I should have waited the couple weeks and trimmed it at the Solstice, or in summer Dormancy.

Not great pics. 20200616_092753.jpg20200616_092733.jpg
