i actually started with a fishkit, a toolbox filled with aquarium related tools, to which was added gardening tools and now a few bonsai tools and a separate seed library. like everything of mine, it's old and has a history.

I used to have one of those tackle boxes! Long gone now though. I store mine in a regular plastic tool box.
The only tools specific to bonsai are a pair of concave cutters. Everything else is just plain old hardware tools.
By pass cutters, scizzors, saws, wire cutters am pliers. My chopsticks for repotting are lengths of graphite fishing rod.
It also holds wire, rooting hormone and a very sharp knife for layering and taking cuttings.

honestly, i had never looked at the name before, Victor, and there are a few pics on the internet

never would have imagined it might be a thing (now, that was a confusing and useless sentence)

as a gesture, i'll ask you instead of googling it - are these concave cutters? they're what i've been using, and i honestly have no idea how i came by them

my first bioart toolbox was a fishkit i used decades back when i had a little aquarium maintenance business named The Tao of Fish. the logo was a yinyang morphed into fish with the caption "We Know the Minds of Happy Fish". i don't recall ever explaining that to anyone, nor have i thought of it for two decades, but it was, IMHO, funny:

Zhuangzi and Huizi were strolling along the dam of the Hao Waterfall when Zhuangzi said, "See how the minnows come out and dart around where they please! That's what fish really enjoy!"

Huizi said, "You're not a fish — how do you know what fish enjoy?"

Zhuangzi said, "You're not me, so how do you know I don't know what fish enjoy?"

Huizi said, "I'm not you, so I certainly don't know what you know. On the other hand, you're certainly not a fish — so that still proves you don't know what fish enjoy!"

Zhuangzi said, "Let's go back to your original question, please. You asked me how I know what fish enjoy — so you already knew I knew it when you asked the question. I know it by standing here beside the Hao."

Concave cuticle cutters?

My wife breaks the bouncer backer in hers every 2 months so I use em!
Not concave but a Nice cut!

In my kit I have rooting powder, wire cutters, concave cutter and two sizes of fiskars. I have 2 of the micro set that I use as shears and another pair of actual pruners. Also chopsticks. Soil and screens.
My next purchase will be a few rolls of wire. A turntable would be nice eventually but considered a luxury.
Concave cutters look like this.

I'm about to make a box/kit (pouch) for all my stuff. At the moment i have a concave cutter, wire cutter, leaf shears, root hook, root hormone, too much seeds, magnify glas, swiss armyknife, wire, exactoknife. Beside that i have to bigger tools like a nice watering can (fine spray), jerrycan (for getting rainwater at my parents place).

i really didn't know those clippers were for toenails. my toenails are not like that. so, what is the little phalangie on the side for? my theory is that it came to me to be sterilized and never left - same as clippers. the angle lets me make close cuts when pruning tomato branches

Practical Biosafety Level One Procedures - working with contagious diseases that don't affect humans

you have two agents, alcohol and bleach. at the lab they use 100% ethanol, but 90% isopropyl works as well, as does denatured alcohol from the paint section. understand how alcohol works - it sterilizes by dehydrating. soaking something in alcohol is mostly useless. dip your clippers in alcohol quickly then let then (instantly) air dry. when you're done, clean your tools, dry them, spray with alcohol - this will also keep them sharp, works for razors, too. if you're using gloves, spray the gloves between subjects with alcohol and air dry, change gloves and bleach everything every five subjects. you want plain liquid bleach - mix it with water 4 parts water to one part bleach.

I don't have a pic of mine, but AJ bought in every similar to this:

Saw others using the same thing previously and decided I needed one. They work perfectly for bonsai tools. I have seen some people carry two- one for tools, one for wire... I love mine, and they are very cheap compared to big, heavy duty tool boxes!
Wow, I like that toolbox, I have one of those leather rolls... and opening and closing for a little snip here or there makes it a PITA
