Just wanted to shout out Lone Pine Gardens in the Bay Area. Was just up there yesterday looking for a more mature Japanese Black Pine or Japanese Maple to add to my mostly very young series of projects. Ended up with a fun 25ish year old piece of JPB with lots of movement to work on for $300. Also, loved walking through their garden with the red shouldered hawks and the scrub jay (pictured) keeping an eye on things.

Steve and his wife (and their nursery dogs) know so much, and their garden have a huge variety of species at all stages of refinement and price points.

Really can’t recommend them highly enough.

+1. 20 years ago, they, maybe through one of their employees sold trees on eBay. My Chinese quince came from there, along with this Japanese Red Pine. This tree didn’t live, and neither did the replacement they sent (both had about zero roots). The quince is in that green bag pot in the background. Photo from about 2006. Really dug that red pine, wish I could find another like it, the bark was incredible and the foliage was very fragrant.

I've known Steve since he was a teenager when he and his dad, Ian, went juniper collecting with me. Steve and Ian used to deliver cactus and succulents to my garden center department back in the 80's and 90's. I still have a great ume and Trident from Lone Pine. Steve's uncle is the late Peter Adams, bonsai professional and author, who also used to teach our local study group.. Great bonsai family. Steve also used to breed cockatiels which he sold to my pet store.
