I've read both ways.
I only bring it in when it dips into 20's and the soil freezes solid.

Would it do better inside?

olives are common trees of the Mediterranean climate.
In theses area the weather is pretty warm to very hot most of the year however it could go down to freezing T in Winter with sometimes snow (but not for very long)
According to the USA climate zone you are in a 9A area, it should be fine for your olives outside with a minimum Winter protection.

My olives stay out on the bench year around and I'm uphill from you near Placerville. Temps drop below 20F a couple of times each winter.

I seem to recall you posting some pretty big olives Paul. Do you also have smaller ones in shallow pots that you leave outside all winter with no ill effects?

Very timely post, I was just thinking about this same question!

Mine are all big. My friends Sam and Vince have a lot of smaller olive bonsai and while it doesn't get quite as cold where they live in Stockton, CA they still don't bring them in.
