Shohin Willow Leaf Ficus

I thought I'd share one of my Shohin ficus.



It was defoliated about 6 weeks ago - I plan on using it as part of my display for the fall show.

In Texas, the definition of Shohin is "shorter than a Shiner".

I was going to say to prune before you drink the beer. But Scott's a big guy. I doubt one would have much effect.

But after a six pack, he'd be grafting Ume on it!

These iPhone pictures don't show the depth and complexity of the glaze.

I have an azalea I was thinking of using with this pot. But then, it's so fabulous, I may just keep it on the shelf!

Or shove it into a more shallow pot. It'll just throw some air roots here and there.

It's pretty small, but it's in there for the show. I'll put it in something slightly bigger after it's over.

Tight squeeze no doubt. I had to break the pot to get it out. But it's grown over the summer - goal was to reposition at a better angle and extend the key branch. Here was the planned new angle after moving the tree to a bigger pot.

After a few months of good growth, there was something to work with.

One issue was that the apex and key branch were on the opposite side of the front. A bit of strategic pruning and wiring to redirect.

And back into the same pot at the new position.



I really like the longer key branch and new position - it feels better balanced to me.
