This is a Seiju elm cutting that I purchased last year from George Muranaka. You can get really nice bark on a small tree this way, saving a lot of time. The cutting was interesting, it had been sawed off the parent tree and the base was in the shape of a cube with the tree sitting on top. I grew it out for a year, cut the base off and planted in a pot this spring. The apex needs to be shortened by an inch, and the branches need to thicken up, but that won't take long.

It is easier for me to control the branch growth on elms when they are in a smaller pot versus a larger training pot. Next spring I will tie a wire around the base and layer the tree for good roots. Check out the bark ! Tree is about 9 inches tall, 2 inch base.

That is a sharp tree! The bark is fantastic. When you say a cutting did you mean this was air layered from the parent tree?

Interestingly, I received a Seiju elm about 30 minutes ago from George Muranaka and came on line here to check for more info. Glad to see your tree. Do you have earlier photos?

No earlier photos, but I had just a few sprouts on the trunk, no apex, and a couple of roots. Last year all I did was grow grow grow to get the tree strong. Lots of sun, feed a lot, watch out for bugs and overwatering.
