Growing in thin soil on a hilltop.


Noble fir roots deeply when able. This trees position over a solid rock somewhat limited root depth, making collection easier. Most roots were obtained.


The mushroom and mycelium were “planted” to try and inoculate the soil. Amanita muscaria has a symbiotic relationship with noble fir. It increases the efficiency of the trees roots for the cost of sugars. Hopefully the benefits outweigh the costs.

I like noble firs (and subalpine firs) - some of my favs. Good luck. IMHO - i might (if mine) plant in the ground for two or three years to let it fatten up, while keeping those lower branches wired and pruned short (while growing a sacrificial leader). But thats just me. Good luck.

Bud status of other collected firs..

-Nobles. November 2023 collection. 2500-3000’: Buds opening/peeking green. The trees which had fewer fine roots collected are a little behind. Those that had a lot of fine roots collected are ahead.




-Nobles. November 2023 collection. 4000-5000’
Low-moderate retrieval of fine roots with collection. Buds slightly enlarged/no change from time of collection.




-Nobles. April ‘24 collection. 2500-3000’:
Buds enlarged. Little to no change from time of collection.




-Silver fir. November 2023 collection. 5000’ Most buds have opened. Shoots extending.
