Shohin deadwood cotoneaster

So this year, in keeping with my tagline, I decided that I need to invest in some better material to challenge myself to grow. Admittedly, the stuff I am getting is still on the low end of the market, and there are much better trees out there, but it's a start.

This little cotoneaster is probably the roughest of the lot. As you can see, there is a gnarly mass of deadwood and a small live trunk. I will watch this one over the next year or so to see how it grows. The ultimate style will probably take advantage of the slant of the main trunk line.

I like the sculptural quality of the deadwood, it will be interesting to see how you develop it over time. Makes me think of trees that have to go on after a riverbank or lakeshore has been undercut.
