I sowed some Shantung maples in 2016. Here's a picture of April 2016 :

I gave away 5 or 6 and I've got 8 left, among which this one I treated according to the "Pringles tube method" ;)

In June 2018, I cut out the bottom of the tube, and repoted it in a plastic cup :

I began to cut out the top of the tube :

I had a look at the "TP Shantung maple" thread and saw that it can be defoliated. That's what I'm going to do later because the tree is still small, it has a nice (?) movement to my eye, but the new shoots are quite straight. So after defoliating it, I will cut back the shoots to one knot (2 buds), and maybe wire the longest ones with 0.5 mm wire.
 
I picked up one of these today, it’s pretty young maybe about 10in tall. So hopefully I’ll be able to wire the trunk for good movement down the road. This is a great idea with the roots. How has it progressed? I imagine it’s much more developed now.
