This is a brand new species to me but I'm having fun with it and this little guy seems to be thriving in the garden so far. I'll document progression and also how I do with cuttings and any future Chojubai additions to the collection, might get another one next year.

This one I purchased in April when it landed from Japan

In May it filled out a little and gave some flowers

It has really taken off as summer progressed. Now in August I did some basic pruning, a little bit of wiring and zipties as guy wires, shaping the canopy.

To be continued!

wow, this is really impressive for one year of growth. My teacher has a habit of calling these “funny little plants” but he has quite a bit of experience with them, so I’m looking forward to learning the ins and outs.

Thanks! Yeah it seems a few of the pros in the NW US have taken to them, i've read and listened to all I can from Michael Hagedorn and Andrew Robson etc.

I don't see too many of these funny little plants in the UK, which they definitely are :) they are so shrub-like, there are suckers coming from the base all the time, but if you don't mind the little thorns they are so flexible you can twist them up any way you like. Apparently they might provide some little flowers when the garden is a bit grim in late winter too.
