I'm selling off my collection of pre-bonsai since I don't really have time to work with them anymore with my current job schedule. I thought I would share the link to the ebay sale of the first tree with you all in case anyone was interested. I'll post additional information as I get the others ready to sell.

Also, I used the Photosynth software to make up a 3D model of the tree, which I thought might be interesting to people independent of the ebay listing. It is a very cool technology that could be helpful for bonsai enthusiasts. Hope you like it. http://photosynth.net/preview/view/b92cfcf9-03c4-4b12-9fe5-e161479c3fdc

For sale is a beautiful Japanese maple (Acer Palmatum) pre-bonsai tree (pictured with a No. 2 pencil in the pot for reference). This tree produces red buds that turn a very nice dark green when the leaf is full grown. The tree sprouts new branches very well and responds to being trimmed with lots of shoots from upstream nodes. This tree is 15.5 inches tall from the soil to the top of the branches and has a trunk roughly 1.25 inches across at the base above the roots. It is very healthy and has begun to put out its spring foliage. This tree would make a great starter tree or a great addition to someone's collection who would like to develop it into a mature bonsai.

I am selling off my collection of eight pre-bonsai trees one at a time because I no longer have the time to maintain them with my current job schedule. I’d like to see them go to someone who will develop them the way they should be. These trees are all seven years old and grown from seedlings I found sprouted in the flower beds at work near their old Japanese maple trees. One of the pictures I’ve included is intended to show what the leaves look like and is from when the trees were roughly one year old. I also include here a link to a Photosynth aggregation of ~200 pictures used to produce a 3D view of the tree that you can manipulate and zoom in to see details from all sides of the tree. http://photosynth.net/preview/view/b92cfcf9-03c4-4b12-9fe5-e161479c3fdc

They have been trimmed back and shaped since I've had them to produce what you see now. I’ve had a ton of fun working with these trees, but unfortunately no longer have time to do so. If you do end up purchasing this tree, I would love if you would periodically email me pictures of how the tree develops over the years.

Shipping will be via FedEx, with your choice of ground or expedited shipping. If you live a long ways from Ohio, I’d suggest the more expensive expedited shipping to keep the tree from getting too stressed out. I am willing to drive up to an hour from Akron, Oh to meet you to hand deliver the tree with a charge for my gas and time ($10).

that's a very nice little maple and the 3d imaging was awesome

Honestly, $75 is a little steep for the starting bid on that tree. I understand it might be worth that in a nursery, and you may well get that for it eventually, but you would get more activity with a lower starting bid IMO.

Also, you might want to try the Bonsai exchange on FB- lots of trees being sold there!

Thanks for the suggestion. I may drop the initial price a bit on the next few I put up, depending on how this first one goes. I'm honestly not really sure what bonsai typically go for, I just picked a price that seemed fair to me and was enough to make it worth posting them instead of just planting them in my yard. I'll check out the FB bonsai exchange to see how that works if I don't sell this one on ebay.

I especially like the backwards walking dog in the last one. That does look like very good material. I am slightly suspicious that this is your first post and you are already quitting the hobby. Since you have a yard you could plant some in pond baskets to escape and would only have to trim them a couple times a year. Too bad my budget is about to be blown for the next 18+ years or I'd get that first one. The neb looks sweet.

I have had several people ask to see pictures of the other trees I’m going to be listing. I finally got them all uploaded to photosynth, so I’m providing links. If you have any particular questions, feel free to send me a message.

I’m going to post #2,3 and 4 today (Sunday) and will post the last three (#5,7,8) the following Sunday, that way if someone really wants one but doesn’t win a bid, they can try again the following week. I'll add links to the ebay sites as I get them up later today in case people would like to look at the listings.

Thanks!

This is a link to normal pictures, separated out into folders by tree. The files will not all be available at this page until around 10am Sunday morning (4-27-14).

There is a small amount of light scarring on the bark of upper branches from me leaving the wires on too long. :-( Also, a squirrel or something decided to chew on the trunk one time and cut the bark pretty bad. I sealed it up and its healing fine and actually gives the trunk some character.

#6 I’m not putting this tree up for sale since it isn’t leafing out as well as the other trees and I don’t want to sell it if isn’t healthy.

Just FYI, I posted #7 last night. It's only a three day auction, that way it will end on a weekend. I thought that would make it easier for anyone who wants to bid, and all of the bids were happening at the last minute anyways.

I didn't post number 6 since it's slow coming out of hibernation and I may not post #8 depending on how this one goes. If anyone has any questions about the tree, feel free to send me a message.

Thanks!

You are doing extremely well on these maples! I have 4" caliper ponderosas that cost half of what that last maple sold for! You are getting lucky with a few guys going at it, I suspect. Good for you, give you a good note exiting the hobby for the time being.

Thanks, I've been really pleased with how it's gone. I'm glad the trees are going to people who really want them and are going to take good care of them.

I'd like to get back into the hobby eventually, but right now I have a 1 hour drive each way to work, where I'm doing my postdoc work. I'm getting to the point where I really need to buckle down so I can get enough research done so I can actually be competitive for job openings (biomedical research funding is super tight right now, so jobs are very competitive). And I'm newly married and trying to renovate our house so we can sell it for a decent price so we can move closer to my current job, or my next job (depending on how slow I move). So yeah, lots on my plate right now. Hopefully in a couple ten years or so life will slow down some.... :p
