Seedling Cutting

I am starting a few JBP this winter from seed and plan on using the seedling cutting technique. I was curious, can this technique be used on other type of trees?

Yes but usually its not needed, Ive seen people doing it in Oaks, since they make big taproots, to obligate them to make a radial rootball since young wich its great for bonsai purpose

JRP, scots pine, ponderosa pine, jack pine, mugo.. I've done it with those pines. Junipers, oaks too.

Young seedlings have this ability to respond to it well. Older plants are less likely to act as expected. Just give it a couple tries and you'll know for sure.

I've seen people I trust suggest that it can be done on maples. I don't see why it couldn't be done on most species. Its also not a replacement for good repotting technique down the road. The technique was also popularized by someone attempting to create shohin in the quickest way possible (as part of other techniques & care). If those aren't your goals, it may not be necessary to utilize this technique.

I have quite a few different seeds starting this spring, I will test run a few deciduous to see the outcome. All conifers will be done to eliminate taproot. Thanks guys.
