Searching for Juniper Itoigawa, Shimpaku, open to suggestions

I am located in Chicago. Budget of $500. Not exactly pre bonsai but not completely styled. Thank you all for any input.

Contact, and join, your local Bonsai Club. There you will find folks that are willing to mentor you, and steer you to perhaps local sources. Good luck.

DougB thank you and yes I am part of the local and regional clubs/society. Not to much in the Shimpaku or Itoigawa currently. We're close to the winter shut down here in the area. Thank you for the assist.

Very generous offer of you. It's not so easy to secure quality material if you live in places where there aren't multiple nurseries. And dealing with vendors online isn't as easy as it seems even if you have cash in hand.

Well... it's not like I want to go into the bonsai reselling business, but I DO remember what it was like living in Chicago yearning for access to nice trees. For example, this is a $250 shimpaku pre-bonsai in California.

I picked it up at the GSBF convention two weeks ago... on the 3rd day of the convention so it had been sitting there for a while. I saw two others that were of a similar size and age that had already been sold.

Of course, we're talking Southern California, so we don't have the breadth of material that you folks back East have. We can't keep Japanese maple, white pine, many types of oaks, etc, alive here. So we have a glut of junipers, black pines, and elms...

We are able to keep more species here on the east coast, but there is not a glut of anything here!! Choices are often limited. Tell your boys in Socal Nurseries to start shipping!

I'd be willing to bet that not shipping is also what keeps quality high. When things get bigger, quality drops. You know what nursery I am close to, Bonsai boy lol, nuff said.

And I envy California bonsai, new school or old school. You folks have a great scene out there.
