Progression thread to document my ginkgos.

First up a small leaf ginkgo I found in a nursery back in February. I went to the nursery to buy a shishigashita JM and a crabapple, but while walking past their row of ginkgos I noticed one with incredibly small trumpet shaped foliage. At the equivalent of $13 I couldn’t pass it up!

This week it started swelling buds so it was time to get to work. It’s been in the nursery bag since I picked it up.

At the nursery, front right. You can see it has smaller, darker leaves than the test

Ginkgos sure do have strange fleshy roots!

My plan is to grow a shorty chunky (possibly shohin) bonsai

You are correct about the chunky roots.
Good news is they have high tolerance for root pruning so you can cut roots quite hard when necessary.

Good luck with the ginkgo projects. I assume you already know it's a slow road you've chosen

@Shibui i feel I could have cut the roots back a bit harder (I did cut them back more after the bare root photo was taken). Hopefully a bit of time in the colander will help build up some finer roots to assist with getting it into a bonsai pot one day.

I’m well prepared for some snail-paced gingko growing! I’ve got another taller one that will be going into one of my grow beds in the next week or 2, hopefully that will move gears from snail to tortoise speed.

The last tree in my garden to wake up this spring. I bought this ginkgo back in January this year and really liked the twin trunks and the base. Today it got the chop and got planted into one of my raised beds. The leaves are a lot bigger than the previous ginkgo I posted so this one will be a taller tree.

Taking her home along with a trident (which I’ll post in my trident thread tomorrow)

Before going into its new home in my grow bed for a few years. It had a really great nebari. I cut the roots back more and tried to flatten the base as much as possible after this photo.
