Hi,

I need to make a fair amount of Boon's mix to transplant 3 JBP garden trees. I've acquired a good amount of medium akadama, some pumice and now need to get some lava. Does anyone know a good source in SD now that SD Bonsai Supply is closed? I see this and it says it's all natural and good as a soil additive. Any concerns with using that?

Other suggestions or recommendations for Akadama also appreciated. I'll need some small akadama soon...Thanks in advance!
Best,
Eric

I used to get it in bulk at West Coast Sand and Gravel ( http://www.wcsg.com/?l=home ) out on Rt 67 toward Lakeside. Other landscape supply places probably have it.

That lava would be fine to grow with, my only concern would be size. You'll have to sift/sort it and you might not end up with much that is a usable size, especially if you're looking for 1/8"-1/4" size pieces. Then you're left with a bunch of larger pieces and you're gonna be out there with a hammer trying to break them up (LOL, been there before!). I'd probably look for other options before you go with the depot stuff UNLESS you've laid eyes on it and know that the size of it will work for your mix.
