I'm trying to understand the healing process of trees better and have some questions: Will new buds ever grow on the healed are? Can one thread graft through a healed wound?

As far as I know buds will never form from scar tissue but can grow around the edges where there may be dormant buds.

Grafting is definitely possible as the healed over wound develops layers of wood, cambium and bark just like a normal branch/trunk.

Yes. You can thread graft through callus or use an approach graft, at least with deciduous trees. Haven't done it with a conifer, but I suspect you can with those as well.

It highly depends on species. For species that can pops up buds anywhere such as bald cypress, yes. Others may not be that prolific in budding.
