I live in western NC obviously and I was wondering if anyone knew where to find good pre-bonsai satzuki azaleas online or at any nearby nurseries.

Does anyone know of an online nursery that sells satsuki azalea bonsai or pre bonsai for under 200

I've looked at this guy's stuff before, overpriced is an understatement with him.

The interesting(?) part is walking through Brussel's and seeing the identical tree for considerably less...

Holy overpriced batman!
That makes me sad as I have bought a few trees from him.......... Value is what you are willing to buy something for, but I would like to save some money. Wish others would market trees as well as him......

I will post next time I'm looking to buy something. Live and learn. Still if you are looking at something Matt has and you are willing to pay for it then its worth it. Great guy to do business with.

You're right, value is very subjective, but can be defined a bit better by enough research. And, if I recall, he does some free shipping on eBay, maybe the pricing is where he makes it up. Yes, nice guy, and perhaps the plus side is that people without access to material at least have this as an option...

Yes I have no access to material. Bonsai is rare in the Dallas ft worth area. No big nursery's with great material at a good price.

I have found his prices to be competitive. Suggest you deal with him one on one. I bought one of his trees at Rendezvous and it was the same price as Brussel's had. In fact I picked it off the Brussel's table and was told it was Matt's tree. He gave me the same discount
(20%) Brussel was offering during Rendezvous.

Competitive...? Maybe everything is negotiable...

A tree I picked up for a friend today on my way past Brussels, just releassd from quarantine, and clearly from the same batch...which he got for less than the tag price:

Again, value is subjective, but doing your homework pays...I have bought many trees from Brussels, and will continue to, when I feel the value is there for me.

The US has to bareroot and quarantine azalea bonsai that come from Japan. Therefore, they also send the most inferior ones to the US, the better ones to Europe and the best ones they don't risk shipping across the world.

Because of the barerooting and quarantine and the inspection costs, the prices are really high for really mediocre azalea bonsai.

So if you care for the bonsai, a US grown JBP or something is probably the way to go. If you like satsuki flowers, there are many cultivar available in the nursery trade in those areas of the US with mild winter temperate climates.

Here Japanese 25 cm tall 1 cm and a bit thick trunks meika style new interesting cultivar azalea are like 90 to 180 euro. But those are not true bonsai.
I have some pictures of my visit to Lodder bonsai on my site:

Those large ones were for sale for 1500 euro btw since you can't really read those tags.

That may be true for azaleas, but native stuff like Bald Cypress, live oak, cedar elms can be found extremely inexpensively.

As for azaleas, look east--east Texas that is. Tyler, TX is known for its Azalea Trail. Acidic soil conditions in the Piney Woods seem to be very good at supporting them

Might be worth finding local nurseries out that way. I know of several landscape nursuries around there that grow out larger trees like live oak, etc. in containers. They might be doing the same with azaleas
