Getting ready for Santa Anita Bonsai Show and bringing a Shohin Display as my entry... from top to left...Itoigawa Juniper, Ficus Nerifolia, Deshojo Maple, Korean Hornbeam, and Princess Guava... Which one do you prefer? Blackpine at top or Itoigawa Juniper....cheers

very fine trees in a great display .... so beautiful and awesome....

for me ... in my humble opinion .... knowing very little about shohin or their display .... I would prefer the removal of the ficus...and have the juniper take it's place .... this feels more homogeneous to me ...

it may also be nice to move the ficus to replace the hornbeam and introduce the juniper there... to remove the repetition of the blue color .... again I know very little of shohin display and these are all as much questions to you are they are thoughts on changes .... certainly a fantastic learning opportunity for everyone here to learn something about an often under discussed aspect of bonsai on these forums ...

I think either choice for the top would be great. All the trees are wonderful. Pots are great and a good mix of colors. All the trees are proportionate in the pots.

Only thing I would do is swap the two bottom trees. They both point out of the rack. Switch places and then they will communicate with each other.

Santa Anita does a judged catagory. Is this judged still? I remember Jim Barrett being a judge and him and I walked it one year while judging.

Thanks Al... yes! Santa Anita is still being judge every bonsai show and run by Jim Barrett... Thanks for the tip, i will swap both trees and i know your very good when it comes to shohin display....

I didn't notice until you mentioned this but I can see it now that you pointed it out .... a very good point ... ya know Al it might be fun for you to put together a few racks for people to see.... and learn from... with a little commentary etc.... maybe in "smokes back yard" :p

@maria -- these are great and I am very thankful you brought them here for us to see.... :)

Being involved with both of the local clubs,Santa Anita and Descanso, i really like the first one..with the black pine, just like to photo
this will be a nice part of the show , great trees and pots all in the right colors

And to anyone in the Los Angeles area, there are two great Bonsai shows comming up,

Santa Anita Bonsai club show at the LA arboritum May26-28
Descanso Bonsai club ,Descanso gardens June 18-19

I love that Deshojo maple, with the colors that almost look like in the fall.
Who is selling Deshojo material, may be the House of Bonsai?

Nice job, I think the JBP for the top, good call on the switch around Al.
Eric we think alike, had the same ideas.

Maria, did you get any pictures of the event you could post? how did you Do??

I'm having a stand built for my shohin out of peruvian walnut even as i type this.

It really is a challenge with the smaller trees and to learn the ropes of shohin display. Wow! lots to learn.

hope you did well!

Congratulations, Peter, for winning the best tree in show (your amazing black pine), and also featuring the best shohin display. Your trees are getting better year after year. Proud of you!

Hopefully, somebody has a picture of your pine, to show it here (BTW, did you grow that pine from seed? - just kidding).

For the shohin display, it was a great idea to add the contorted shimpaku on the side. It is one of the best little shimpaku I've ever seen.

I was there when Jim Barrett was judging your trees, and just for the record, I did NOT threaten him with slashing his tires in case he didn't give you top marks.

BTW, another bravo for Peter.

I also enjoy the fact that you held much restraint in the setting up of this display. The one rookie mistake that many make is the over use of small stands under each tree in a box stand. You have used only one which is very appropriate. Setting the trees directly on the shelves of the box is a great plus. You hang around with Kenny Lam, the shohin King?

Tell him Al said hi.

Actually checked out this show while I was in LA last week, this was one of the highlights of the show along with a beautiful black pine. I can post some pictures that I took tonight.

Here's the other award that i got that day " Best Judged Tree in Show " and my japanese blackpine tops them all.. :)
