Hi so I am new to bonsai and just joined the forum all but 5 minutes ago, I have been growing my Delonix Regia (royal poinciana now since perhaps February of this year. Already quite beautiful ran into a lot of issues with it since the start. It’s only been a few months and it’s been repotted 3 times. Once it got drowned in rain and once got dug up by puppy. Third time it was to plant it into a bigger pot with better soil and it’s still doing fantastic. My question to the forum and experienced growers is this. It has been growing very rapidly it’s already about 5-6 inches tall. Will I be able to repot it in the fall or wait until spring? The roots already appeared to be quite large when I initially repotted it last. Any tips would be super helpful thank you. I can post a picture in the thread too if that helps?

To be honest this species isn’t used very much or at all by long time bonsaists. It turns up occasionally because for some reason it’s seeds come with “grow your own bonsai kits.”

If there are developed delonix bonsai they are likely in the tropics. If you live in a temperate zone that gets temps freezing or below you will have to use overwinter this inside which presents another set of issues

Strangely enough it was the only seed out of the entire kit that actually grew too… I imagine special lighting and what not would be required for the winter months since you can’t really leave it near a window or outside for obvious reasons. I live in NJ USA so not necessarily the tropical climate needed for it. On a side note, my ginseng ficus is doing really well after a few years.

Fwiw. This is a pretty good care guide. This species seems to be most common in Puerto Rico. Several un-messed with photos of delonix bonsai are from there. The vast majority of mature delonix bonsai are photoshopped (mostly pretty badly)

Thank you, I had used this guys care guide for my ficus actually 😁 very informative I suppose I should’ve checked to see if he had one on my little flame tree. I appreciate your reply, I was aware it would be a difficult tree especially for a beginner… I like a challenge though.

I have one that i grew from seed, In Autumn i defoliate and put it indoors where it can get sun during the day, i also use a reptile heating pad to keep the soil warm it does very well .All the best with yours.
