I just had a weird thought: has anybody ever trained a tree (probably trident maple) to completely engulf a rock; therefore making the trunk appear massive? Does this naturally happen with root-over-rock trees? I have no experience with root-over-rock bonsai, so that may be why this question sounds stupid...

Yea, Bill Valavanis told us in one of his classes that a lot of the old Japanese ROR Tridents have totally covered their rocks now.

Tridents roots are hard to control... they keep covering more and more.

Julian Adams has a ROR trident that I've admired several times while visiting his place. It's been on the rock for over 20 years and has actually cracked the rock.
