I went to the Rocky Mountain Bonsai Society show in Denver today. Very awesome bonsai. These were two of my favorites, both shohin.

My most favorite bonsai of the show: Shohin Mugo on a rock

Second most favorite: Shohin Colorado Blue Spruce

I was both surprised and disappointed that there was not a single bunjin (my favorite style) in the show. Why would that be?

IMHO, because they are very difficult to do well. I think the same is true of windswept even though it is probably every noob's first 'masterpiece'

I'd say Colorado has access to such killer material, and ancient DW...

Unless you find a perfect literati chillin there as is...
We won't see many from there...

Cuz no one in there right mind would reduce a Colorado tree to literati!

Maspictures!

So true! Ha!
Live and learn...

I like the trees, but that rock the mugo is on....it's too flat, thick and rectangular, IMHO. Too big in general.
Looks like a fun to tote that chunk around.
More pics?

I would guess that the reason that you weren't seeing bunjin, is people aren't collecting the skinny barren trees. I love the beat up old spruce, larch, fir, that can be found inthe mountains. Just a question, are these trees you photographed feom amateur members?
