Repotted this extremely root bound collected winged elm today. I got it last year at the Potomac Bonsai Association show. Cool little tree collected ten years ago in Oklahoma. It was sold because a falling overhead tree limb fell on it and broke the apex out. I plan on redeveloping the apex over a few years. Elms develop top growth quickly. Repotted in aoki mix in a Koyo pot I got from Matt Ouwinga specifically for this tree. Tunes out OK. Now have to manage new growth and hope the root work didn’t weaken it too much.

Did you mound the soil for rootball reasons or that's your preference?

Nope. This tree has a huge ball of callus under the trunk from what used to be the two root. I shaved some off that lump off as I repotted. Could not take too much as some of the callus had roots. Next repotting will take that lump down further so the tree sits lower

Should be “tap root” under the trunk. 🙄
