I repotted my mugo today, with the guidance of the compiled Vance mugo information. I just hope I was interpreting what I read correctly.

I believe at least one if not two of the limbs are going to be sacrificial for the trunk taper (see photos). I took off about 50% of the foliage and tried to do as little damage to the roots as possible so fingers crossed this nursery stock turns into a beautiful bonsai!

I’m thinking I’ll let her rest for the season.

That’s a good start! Might want to ensure all tips are firmly pointing upward for maximum growth, whether or not you intend to keep these.

Also might want to further reduce the three branch junction on top down to two.

The just hit me again when I read your comment.

I recently watched a video of Kimura on wiring old needles at the base of the tuft to face upward for aesthetic, and then Ryan Neil mentioning Auxin and Cytokinin functions with branches down and tips oriented upward. A good reminder to see your comment right now.
