This past weekend, a local crew pulled a bald cypress. The video is below.

My comments:
Use a reciprocating saw with a 12" carbide pruning blade. A hand saw should only be for smaller trees or as a backup.
The muck they're standing in isn't a deterrent to using a reciprocating saw. I've plunged the front end of my Dewalt saw into water. It's not recommended, so I bring a can of WD-40 to clean it right there in the swamp. The WD stands for Water Displacement.
Use large batteries on the saw. At least a 4-hour battery. That's what they're called, but they last 15-minutes on a tough job like this. If you use a small battery, it will drain so quick you'll think you never charged it. I've seen it happen, the guy was embarrassed.
Bring a longer rope to use with the come-along. Granted, there were 5 guys (one actually named Guy) who were willing to push that tree down to pop the roots, but they worked too hard.

This video makes me want to go out this weekend and collect. Maybe I'll bring @DeepSouth for his first dig. The whole thing is a big maybe. It's going to be a warm 65°, so I'm expecting snakes.
