Hi everyone I’m new to bonsai and just acquired this Japanese maple, wanted some advice as to trimming , thickening the trunk etc

Let it grow and thicken 😉
It’s a three year old Japanese maple I’m thinking next year repotting it and maybe start looking at the roots. Nebari is what I’m shooting for or grow it on a rock . But I am planning on growing it more so it’s going in bigger pot next year . Also should I start looking at what branches I want to keep and prine them during winter or wait to till next year.

Welcome. First decide how tall you want the tree to be. The base of the trunk will need thicken to 1/6 to 1/12 of that size. Grow the tree to encourage the thickening.

I’m thinking pretty much a medium size bonsai

I was here couple months ago. I just started too. I know it’s super tempting to cut/prune. I think they advised me to just do nothing as far as cutting or styling and just focus on the horticulture side. Get the plant super healthy. I know that’s not what you want to hear right now.

I figured as much so to treat my fever to prune I ended up getting two other bonsai to treat those urges lol . I’m treating this one as my long time investment . I want to really get the trunk to thicken fertilizer pellets in the soil npk at 15-9-12. I water twice a day morning and late afternoon

Lmao I was just about to come back here and suggest just that. I did the EXACT thing lol

This is a nice little tree but it is already too big to try and grow on a rock. The roots will already be woody and stiff and it will be very difficult to get them to form to the shape of the rock correctly and convincingly.

If you want to grow a root over rock. Get a much smaller seedling to start it with so that you can get the roots to really grow to the shape of the rock better. There are threads here that show how people have done it.

Also I see two trees here. There’s a nice twin trunk waiting to be air layered off just under the split 😉

If you have the ability next spring to put it in the ground, that will expiate the growth. If not planting in a larger(shallow) grow-box would help too.

I was thinking of doing 3’x3’ box to put him in, don’t think It would be a good idea to put it in the ground . I’m in Connecticut
