Thought I'd start a thread with this guy, just to keep track. The first photo is as purchased from a landscape nursery for less than $20 last year(on the left I think) and the second one is as it sits today . . . becoming a pine triangle ;)

The best thing about having these is that you can fuss with them constantly. They keep me from "loving" my other trees to death!

This one has a nearly 3" trunk; I think they need to be big to be even remotely convincing/interesting. I started dozens of cuttings and still discarded pieces bigger than most portulacaria "bonsai" I see.

I was just thinking the same thing the other day. When I had a nice dwarf jade, I always had some trimming to do. I miss that tree -- gave it away when moving to California a couple of years ago.
 
I suppose they can stay outside all year long where you are, right?

Here, they can't develop as well as in much warmer climates. I know a nursery near Paris where they import such trees from China, but it's difficult to keep them in good shape...

What's interesting here is that most members live in the US of A, and there are so many climates there where you live. So we can see subtropical species as well as trees taht are only healthy in cold continental climate.

No need to spend zillions on artificial light and heating, or keeping your conifers in a fridge if you live in Miami :rolleyes:

Think local, reduce your carbon footprint and grow healthy, happy bonsai! :D
 
Cool, I like jades. I have a bunch I bought, and from their cuttings. I'll have to train one or two upright and see if I can get a pine kinda shape..maybe a crassula too. I have plenty of both, growing very well. Your right, theres always something that can be worked on with jades.

It's pretty much a garden plant that's entertaining to fuss with. I keep taking cuttings and giving them to people who I know kill plants. I've definitely spent more time on it than it's worth, but mostly when I've been drinking and I shouldn't touch my "real" trees anyway ;)
