I got two Pondies on the B&B auction at Golden Arrow Bonsai. They arrived in the mail today. So when I received them, I unwrapped the plastic, burlap wraps, took alittle soil duff off the roots to spread out a bit and potted in a loose soil mix with mostly pumice 60% and conifer blend soil 40%. These pots were the deepest I had.. I really need to get deep pots for when these are ready to be re-potted in the future. The angle for the larger pine 50 y.o will be a cool cascade for future styling based on how I arranged the roots to start out propped on some wood...the smaller one was 45 y.o ..Below are the two Ponderosa pines. Additionally, I was at a native nursery getting some tasty kusomono plants (I’ll post my composition this week) I noticed an old cracked bark pitch pine on the side of a green house. It was in a shallow bonsai container with a Atlantic Cedar for some composition they used it for 12 years ago.. The pitch pine was originally collected why whom ever worked on it so I have no idea how old it really is .. I still want a Yamadori I collect myself but this feeds the appetite for now...Luckily, it came right out of the pot. It was only in loose draining potting soil. I separated the two , took some roots off the Pitch Pine, left soil at the core and put into a mica pot. I won’t touch that for a year. The bark is amazing ... it will be an awesome literati some day when it’s ready to style. How’s I do ? .. I’ll keep the ponderosa in the shade to recover.. but what do ya’ll think.. I’ll snap better pictures tomorrow.. I’m beat

Better pictures, I really like this Pitch Pine. It’s god a nice base , and it tapers towards the top, it’s destined for literati could even put an interesting bend above the older bark.... It will be a good experience on aftercare. The pots aren’t the ones they’ll end up in, but they are small enough that the roots won’t be out of control. And the mix is good for root development. I can easily put them in a more shaded spot if needed.

Nice trees! What's the B&B auction?

Edit- nevermind, I see it's Balled and Burlapped. But it looks like it's a sale moreso than an auction?

I reposted a new thread it’s not so Pitch Pine, it’s a Shortleaf Pine. I’m going collecting for a pitch pine this fall or next spring. The cascading ponderosa pine died, I think it didn’t have enough roots. Oh well I gambled with the B&B auction. The other one is doing well and setting buds. Ready to have first styling next spring.

Take heart. I have 3 BB Ponderosas; 2 from 2014, one from 2016 all had small roots and have done well. Generally pretty tough trees.

Better pic of the Ponderosa that survived. I’m still sad about the loss of the other ponderosa pine , it was beautiful, and it didn’t survive. idk maybe I’m compartmentalizing the loss of the older ponderosa pine because I suffered a loss of my grandpop (95) in July so I’m grieving over a pine too. Sounds silly but sorry for the therapy post.
