Many of the extension sites suggest spraying pine fungicide when the new needles are about half grown and then when fully grown. Does this mean that I should wait to apply fungicide until after summer decandling and then apply fungicide to the second flush growth?

I never spray fungicides on my pines. Insecticides against aphids and adelgids yes but only when I see them. In general it is better to only apply crop protection when it is required, as many products can have some phytotoxic effects. Maybe at your location it is necessary but I would say some more information would be required. E.g. do you have or had problems before?

I would recommend applying a system around the time of decandling. This will protect the new flush as it emerges until it hardens off. Id also recommend applying fungicide in the fall as the temperatures fall as this is when diseases can be a problem. Hope this helps

I apply Bonide Infuse granular fungicide in the spring as the first candles are extending. Then I will do it again after decandling black pines. Once the fungus is in the tree it is harder to deal with and the extending candles are suceptible to it then. You could probably use ine of the appropriate fungicidal sprays instead of Bonide Infuse granular which is only active for about 30 days after application.

Most spores are sent out in spring to match the first flush. So I wouldn't be worried a lot about the second flush getting issues if there are no double flushing or late flushing pines in your region.

But that's coming from me, and I've only once sprayed fungicides on pines in six or so years.

I spray fungicide on the candles both prior to decandling and on the second flush. Might not be necessary for some folks, but I’ve had issues with needlecast more than once, so I just spray every year as a prophylactic now.

Yeah. I get some kind of fungus every year - probably needle cast.

I also treat with infuse in the spring and try to spray periodically throughout the summer into early fall
I have humid summers where I live so it pays to treat preventatively

If I don’t spray every 4-6 weeks, I fight with needle cast on my JBP. I hit them today, and will again just after decandling in July.

Will consider us lucky then besides some insects and Prunus fungal issues.
